New Brochures

In 2009, the Newfane Conservation Commission printed a large supply of an updated brochure with a map and information about the trails in the town forest.
Copies are available free at the Newfane town office.

Hiking Alerts

The following hiking alerts are current as of 9/10/09 except as specifically noted below.

Owls Head Trail approaching Owls Head (north of Mt Martha) from the north is full of mud and pretty much impassable.
Mt Resolution -  trip reports say this trail is very buggy.

Mt Catamount - the climbing on this mountain is much harder than the guidebooks indicate.

Geocaching

Have you tried geocaching yet?  It's sweeping the nation.
Newfane is home to many geocaches.  In fact, there is at least one in our town forest.
All you need to do is get a GPS device and check the geocaching website for information on where the caches are hidden.  Then, using your GPS, you can locate them and see what treasures they might hold.  The fun is all in the quest for hidden "treasure".
Some caches are easily found on your own home street.  Others might require that you bushwhack for many miles into remote areas of the White Mountains.
There are geocaches that remain fixed in place and geocaches that are allowed to be moved by whoever finds them.  Like a message in a bottle, they could wind up anywhere in the world.
So get outside, get some exercise, and enjoy the sport.
