Newfane Conservation Commission

     Vermont is justly famous for its farms. Windham County alone is the home for a large number of agricultural producers selling products from apples to wool.

     Buying locally is a healthy choice. Local produce is fresh and nutritious.  But it is also healthy for the state's economy. All Vermonters and visitors benefit when our farmlands are in sound productive order.  Ensuring successful farms helps sustain the open farmland that defines the beauty of Vermont.

In June, 2005, the Newfane Conservation Commission produced a brochure which supplies information about 29 agricultural producers in Windham County.  Thanks to a grant from the Association of Vermont Conservation Commissions (the AVCC) we printed 5,000 brochures and distributed them at stores, restaurants, town offices, inns, fairs and other venues throughout the county. 

As of November 14, 2006, only 500 copies of the brochure remain.  If you would like to obtain a copy, they are available free of charge at the Newfane Town Offices on Route 30 in Newfane, Vermont.

Please note that our brochure is only a sampling of the many fine farms in our county.  Participation in the brochure was open to any producer who agreed to the terms of the grant, and there were two newspaper articles inviting people to participate, but there were still many people who did not hear about the brochure in time or preferred other ways to tell the public about their products.

One enjoyable way to learn about Vermont agriculture is to attend the Strolling of the Heifers which occurs in Brattleboro on the first weekend in June.  This event is not in any way organized or sponsored by the Newfane Conservation Commission, but we do heartily recommend it.  The Strolling of the Heifers attracts thousands of visitors each year.  The proceeds are used for programs that promote education about agriculture.
